TRAINING

Naturopathic physicians licensed in the province of British Columbia must receive four years of post-graduate training in an approved naturopathic medical college.

Pre-admission requirements are equivalent to those for entrance to conventional medical schools. Training includes basic medical and clinical sciences, Naturopathic philosophy and therapeutics. Graduating students receive a doctoral degree, "N.D.", Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine. The North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners allows graduates from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (Toronto), National College of Naturopathic Medicine (Portland), Bastyr University (Seattle), Southwest College of Natural Medicine and Health Sciences (Arizona), and University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine (Connecticut)  to sit for the NPLEX licensing exams, required to practice in B.C.

QUALIFICATIONS

There are established standards governing the practice, ethics, and education of Naturopathic physicians in British Columbia. Under provincial law these standards are enforced by the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia (CNPBC). The Board of CNPBC is comprised of five naturopathic physicians and three government appointed public members. Although there may be practitioners who use the term "Naturopathic Physician", unless they are licensed there is no regulating body. Their practice may be based on a less than adequate body of knowledge and training. Only licensed naturopathic physicians have the extensive schooling and credentials to call themselves professionals in the field of naturopathy.

If you feel that a licensed naturopathic physician has not acted in your best interests has acted in an incompetent manner or harmed you, please contact the CNPBC. Your feedback helps to maintain a high standard of quality of naturopathic care.
